Reduced investment in the engineering workforce in Queensland has led to a situation where professional engineers in DTMR are receiving below market rate pay and conditions.

This is an unsustainable situation which puts the state's road network at risk.

Engineers design, build, operate and maintain the road system that Queensland citizens depend upon. They provide an essential community and economic service. It's important that they receive the recognition and support they deserve.

Through APESMA professionals in the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) are campaigning to achieve:

• restoration of engineer pay and conditions to the market rate;
• government funding of a real pay increase;
• provision of incentives and ongoing assistance for attaining and maintaining RPEQ; 
  
• implementing a new classification structure for professional engineers;
• addressing unsustainable workloads;
• securing fairer and reliable management of leave entitlements; and
• improvements to career development and progression.

Next phase of the campaign

Last month many DTMR employees and their supporters wrote to the department warning them of the engineer shortage.

But the department’s hands are tied because the government isn’t prepared to provide any more funding.

That’s why the campaign is going to the next level.

Email government backbenchers and let them know you are worried that the engineer shortage at DTMR will cause delays and blowouts to projects in their electorates.
